On the 20th of February 2011 I went to Caravaca de la Cruz, Spain, to do an international training course on human rights education. With twenty participants from all over Europe, e.g. Denmark, Spain, Greece, Armenia, Moldova etc. we debated and worked on human rights education.

“10th of December 2011: Finally the journey could start”, Anne remembers excitedly: ahead of us was one week to be spent in Kobuleti, Georgia, a small town on the Black Sea. Five Dutch representatives were sent by the EIDP to participate in the project on Connecting Generations via Volunteering together with more than 30 participants coming from eight different countries (Sweden, Spain, Turkey, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Latvia, The Netherlands).

Election Observer Mission in Donetsk, Ukraine, January 2010
Arriving in Donetsk after our flight from Amsterdam, was like arriving in a different world. In an isolated hotel of foregone glory, we met a great group of people. We enjoyed long evenings of bonding, eating Ukrainian meals with dille, Danish piratos and Dutch Unox sausage, and drinking Belarusian vodka and Armenian wine.

From November 28th till December 5th, I had the honour to participate on a project in Moscow of the European Institute for Democratic Participation (EIDP) that was organised by Sabine Dankbaar en Pieter-Jan Baas. This project, named ‘Making social inclusion work: Skills in Action’, elaborated on discrimination against migrants and ethnic minorities and the role that democratic participation can play in improving the position of these subordinated groups.

The 16th of June was finally there, time to leave for Albania. Just a week earlier I applied for a spot on a training course in Vlora. I was so happy when I heard that I was chosen as one of the people who would get to go there! It was very exciting. Albania was a relatively unknown country to me.

YOUR CHANCE - be a part of Europe! - Non-formal education for local and regional youth engagement Training Prijedor, Bosnia-Herzegovina 01st - 09th of July 2010
After finding out I was chosen to represent the Netherlands in a Training Course in Bosnia-Hercegovina, I felt very privileged. Together with my colleague, Tom Vesters, we travelled to Croatia by plane. From Zagreb, the capital of this country, we had to find a bus to the town of Prijedor in the north-western part of Bosnia, located in the preponderantly Serbian part of the country. We managed to find a bus in the nick of time, by trying to understand the Balkan Esperanto. By talking Polish and Russian, we could understand some of what the locals said and they were able to help us with everything. I immediately felt welcomed and at home.

Training Course in Tbilisi, Georgia in November 2009 First of all, this training course was a wonderfull experience which I'll never forget. As one of the few participants from western Europe it was very educative to communicate and get to know people from "the East". There are so many cultural differences and that's also why a big part of the course was about cultural diversity. You work together in workgroups and have discussions about several subjects like citizenship, cultural diversity and human rights.
